Human Insight Plus Technology Curation: How the Florida Authority Network Rewrote the Rules of Florida Business News

With more than 1,600 original Florida business articles across a statewide network of branded metro and industry news domains, Tampa Bay publisher Brian B. French has built a model with no known peer in the state

TAMPA BAY, Fla. — August 1, 2026 — Machines are very good at finding things. They are not good at knowing what matters. The Florida Authority Network, built by digital strategist and former institutional portfolio manager Brian B. French, is a statewide news operation constructed on exactly that distinction — and it has produced more than 1,600 original articles on Florida business.

French calls the method tech intelligent curation: artificial intelligence handles retrieval, review and cross-referencing across enormous volumes of public material, while a named human being decides what any of it means.

“The machine found the sentence. It did not know why the sentence mattered,” French said. “Every valuable thing in this business happens in that gap. Judgment about what is significant, willingness to commit to a claim, and the discipline to say out loud where the evidence runs out — none of that is retrieval. That is a person, with a name on it, who can be wrong in public.”

Statewide breadth. Vertical depth. Both at once.

The Florida Authority Network covers the state through purpose-built, branded domains rather than a single site with regional sections.

Metro coverage runs through properties including MiamiBusinessNews.com, StPetersburgBusinessNews.com and BusinessNewsSouthFlorida.com. Industry coverage runs through verticals including FloridaLawFirmNews.com and FloridaTechnologyNews.com. Together the network spans roughly two dozen news and press release properties.

The architecture is deliberate. Florida is not one market — it is five distinct regional economies with different capital sources, different dominant industries and almost no overlap in professional networks. A single statewide site serves none of them well. A network of branded properties serves each one directly, and gives every article a domain whose name states exactly what it covers.

“No one else in Florida is doing this at this scale, in this format, with this level of sourcing,” French said. “Sixteen hundred articles is not a content strategy. It is an archive. It is the difference between publishing about Florida business and being the record of Florida business.”

Sponsored content, clearly labeled, for the businesses nobody covers

The network also accepts sponsored content — and French argues that in 2026 this is a service, not a compromise.

National newsroom employment has fallen nearly 60 percent since 2005, and Northwestern University’s Medill Local News Initiative counted 213 U.S. news desert counties in 2025, with another 1,524 counties down to a single remaining news source. The practical result in Florida is that a successful law firm, medical practice, construction company or technology startup can operate for a decade and never once be written about.

“There are thousands of real Florida businesses doing genuinely interesting things that no publication has the staff to cover,” French said. “That is not a judgment about their merit. It is arithmetic. We give those businesses a professionally written, properly structured place to tell their story — and we label it as sponsored, every time, without exception.”

Built for how people actually find information now

Every property in the network publishes without paywalls or advertising clutter, structured for Answer Engine Optimization — answer-first sections, question-formatted headings, schema markup and linked primary sources — so that content is retrievable by AI systems as well as readers.

Research released in July 2026 by 5WPR and Everything-PR found that seven major paywalled newsrooms captured zero citations across a 40-query test of AI-generated answers, while open-web publishers captured 91.3 percent.

“Being excellent and being invisible are not mutually exclusive, and a lot of very good journalism is finding that out right now,” French said. “We built for the way people actually get information in 2026. That is not a prediction anymore. It is the present tense.”
